The demand driven by oil prices rising and therefore a need for greater energy security has caused a shift in paradigm. The search for alternative sources to supplement the uncertainty is now the main focus. The result of this uncertainty has triggered the investment on alternative sources of energy such as biofuels. This has prompted huge land grabbing in Africa, the scramble is on the rise. In Tanzania for example, four million hectares of land has been requested for biofuel production and this is likely to pose a real threat to food security.

The Global Change Course Students of 2010 (Action aid Tanzania) made a field research in the Kisarawe and Rufiji districts where a huge chunk of land has been grabbed by biofuel investors for producing biofuel. The Global Change group held future workshops where people were given an opportunity to state the problems they might face. The personal stories we did with the farmers and some of the investors were conducted in order to get a clearer picture of the situation. The group also stayed and spent nights with the local households (host families) in Nyamwage village (Rufiji), where the group got an opportunity to visit biofuel investors both in the Kisarawe and Rufiji districts. Here we talked to Sun biofuel, Safe production Ltd and African Green Oils Ltd.

The process of land acquisition was not clear and the villagers were not involved in land acquisition process. The government officials (TIC, Disstrict Officers, and some members of the Parliament) trick the villagers to make imprecise decision to let go off their land. The land that is the only source of income for the farmers.

During the land acquisition process, villagers were not aware of their land rights, the value of the land or the future consequences. One farmer told us during our dialogue meetings “Tulikariribishwa Kwenye mkutano uliojaa maneno matamu na kila ahadi nzuri,WalituTulikariribishwa Kwenye mkutano uliojaa maneno matamu na kila ahadi nzuri,Walituandalia chakula kizuri sana ambacho baadhi yetu hatukuwahi kula Na wakatupa na andalia chakula kizuri sana ambacho baadhi yetu hatukuwahi kula Na wakatupa na napesa kila mmoja shs 1000”. The effects of biofuels investments to the livelihoods of the poor people in rural areas has reached immediate and underlying negative impacts ranging from economical, social, environmental and cultural.

Insufficient attention is being paid to the lack of actions on social protection and nutrition for the poorest. The food security and nutrition of the poor which was already compromised by the world food crisis is now severely jeopardized, which is characterized by high food prices that leads the poor to limit their food consumption.

The communities have been displaced from the areas where they were cultivating and some of them have been forced to vacate their farms and land. Before cultivating the already existing crops and trees were not compensated at all.

There are so many conflicts between the communities and biofuel companies, rising from denied access to water points located in the project area formerly used by the communities. Some were destroyed during the clearing of the land for project activities especially the wells in the villages of Kisarawe district.

The establishment of the plantations has had a high environmental impact, ranging from deforestation and water depletion. The local people can no longer obtain a large number of building products and resources from the forest which appeared as a result of plantations. However the most serious negative environmental impact of the biofuel production in particularly the indirect land use as more carbon emissions will be released as forests and pristine land is converted from cropland to biofuel production. The appropriation of farmers land by biofuel companies is causing problems for the local people, because they do not have formal ownership of land and hereby the community members can not precisely know how their tomorrow will be. This is because the land they are settled on is being claimed by biofuel investors and the land is leased in the hands of the investors for 99 year.

Even worse the people’s cultural aspects were undermined as they were denied access to their ancestral burial grounds. In some cases, graves were demolished as the land was given to investors and this was evidenced in Nyamwage village in the Rufiji district.

Unfavorable working conditions are also some of the consequences that we have seen from the biofuel production. Long working hours from 6:00am-6:30pm where people are underpaid (2500shs per day). Lunch and breakfast is also not provided. There is no job contract, no protective jeers like gambtosh and people are denied of payment in case of any complaint.

The land including natural resources such as forests has been providing a safety net for the victims of social changes, displacement, unemployment and lost opportunities in the urban areas. This loss has increased the vulnerability of the communities so they do not have control over their lives.

According to our research findings, the biofuel companies have not been able to live up to the promises they made. Local people are facing serious consequences such as waiting for schools, hospitals, roads, wells, boreholes and community centers as they were promised by the investment companies during land acquisition.

In a nutshell, the farmers must be educated on the matters regarding land issues. The framework must be clear. There must be a clear definition of what marginal land is and which land is available for investment. During our research this was not clear to any of the involving parties. As one of the investors said “The land we got was no man’s”. If we have to be sincere, fertile land was allocated to biofuels investors in disguise of the so called marginal land, something which is contrary to Tanzania Biofuel Task force guidelines. The parties concerned in the allocation of land to biofuels investments, should think about the poor people who’s land is their only resource and avoid situations were native people might become evicted from their ancestral lands in future, and the land of which their great grand fathers fought for under MAJI-MAJI rebellion.

In summary, the biofuel investment in northern Tanzania can be summarized into two words, oppressive and exploitation of the Tanzanian peoples land. That is why there should be a policy of biofuel investments in Tanzania that ensures food security.

Unless we choose to try,we are certain to fail

My greatest lesson at the platform has been on the promise of change, the power of dreams and optimism. We didn't always agree on things and on how to go about doing things but some how, some how we managed to remain true to our vision, punching hunger and freeing the hungry Billion.

We have been here for three months and this week we have our mega event, which will be a Press Release titled: Ensure food Security: Stop Bio-fuel Investment without a policy, which you are all invited, will try see how we can have it online to involve those who have been following us from without Tanzania.

So did we achieve anything? I think we did...we earnestly believed we could do something about hunger and we went out to do something about it, might have been too little to create change but it is enough that we tried.

Hunger is a global problem though causes are myriad, one thing comes out clearly we have a faulty food system. Food is an essential commodity which the Agri Business world has chosen to commercialize and treat as a luxurious commodity which only a few can afford, for petes sake their is so much food in the world and its mind boggling to imagine human beings die of hunger when they live amongst fellow human beings, and at a time when the world can produce more than it can consume.

In his book," The grapes of Wrath": John Steinbeck writes I don't aim to starve to death before i kill the man who is starving me to death. We are not asking you to shot the government we are asking you to join us in telling the government that we won't allow them to starve us by allowing biofuel investments without policies that ensures we and our children are food secure. unless we all try this we are certain to fail and worse starve.

PRESS RELEASE

Ensure Food Security: Stop giving land for biofuel investment without a policy

Dar es Salaam, Friday the 29th of October 2010

Today Tanzania is not benefiting anything from the biofuel investment and the consequences are huge.
<img width='1' height='1' So we can reach out to everyone! Because fighting hunger is a collective responsibility!!

In the near future the word hunger has to be like it never existed! In the afternoon we had a world premiere on a short documentary presenting our key finding from the fieldtrip to Kisarawe and Rufiji. The idea behind the Future Award was to approach the stakeholders who are involved in the process of making the policies on biofuel investment in a positive and humorous way. Our message was clear: the stakeholders hold the Tanzanian future in the hollow of their hands and therefor they should start acting today – not tomorrow!

It was a long day (especially for those of us who unfortunately don’t speak Swahili) but worth the wait. Our approach really worked out very well and we are now in contact with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food security and arranging a dialogue meeting where we will hand them a report with our main findings and discuss what should be done in shorter and longer perspectives to Punch Hunger in Tanzania.

All the way through the training on the Global Platform we have being talking a lot about how important to the do the campaign ‘bottom-up’ and go to the streets, raise awareness and inspire people to ‘be the change’ and become FOOD right FIGHTERS themselves.

The World Food Day was the day we took action! According to the ActionAid report on implications of biofuel production on food security in Tanzania more than 36% of the population lives for less than a dollar a day and 60 % are food insecure, most of them are living in rural areas. That makes Tanzania among the poorest counties in the world.

We have been looking at the causes of hunger here in Tanzania and one of the recent causes is biofuel investment. Through our research in Kisarawe and Rufiji, we have seen how this affects the people. We have seen how food security has been compromised by biofuel production as land, water and labor which should be used for food production is being used for biofuel. These findings are supported by the ActionAid report.

We have seen how TIC has allocated village land to biofuel investment and heard how investors promised the world to these people and yet almost nothing has happened. Still the farmers hope for a better future, where they get what they were promised - Schools for their children, water to survive, jobs for the youth and hospitals for the sick. Even in the rare cases where people do get jobs the conditions they work and live under are horrifying. They are based on seasonal contracts which mean no rights for the workers. We have cases where workdays are from 6 am to 6 pm every day of the week for a minimum wage of 3000tsh. Not only is this not enough money to feed their families, also, they have no possibility to provide medication or schooling for their children. This is not only depriving them of education but also against the labor law here in Tanzania that should ensure the wellbeing of the people.

The consequences of biofuel investment in Tanzania are huge. More and more land is being grabbed for biofuel production resulting, which has the potential for food insecurity if the situation is left as it is. This means that the farmers have less or no land for their own food production, and no money to buy the food they need.

The biofuel guideline has been under construction since 2006, and is now to be released. However they are not enforceable by law, and will not demand investors to own up to their responsibilities. That is way we say “No biofuel without a policy that is implemented and that ensure food security!”

You might think that this problem only affects the farmers in Tanzania, so why should you care?

The truth of the matter is that it does affect you. Tanzania’s future is on the line! Your future is on the line!

When the ministry of land through TIC allows the land to be taken from the farmers and given to biofuel companies, it becomes a threat to all Tanzanian people. Government has to prioritize food security and not only focus on investments that are not benefiting Tanzania. Right now the government’s main focus should therefore be to feed the people of Tanzania. Make it a right to have food on the table in every household!

Reality is that people are dying of hunger! The biofuels investments do not benefit Tanzania by bringing any local development. This is only the beginning. As reported in The Guardian dated 11 October, four million hectares of land is as I speak being requested for biofuel production without a policy! Four percent of your country’s land is in danger of being used for biofuel production. If we don’t stand together now against this problem: food insecurity will only increase in the future. Not only will you not have enough food for you and your family - your children will be deprived of the right to go to school, and the right to have a bright future.

Africa’s land, Labour and Water is been exploited to grow biofuels that benefits the western countries. Is it right that YOU are growing food for the western vehicles, when YOUR children are starving in your country?

That is why we are Food right Fighters, and you can be a Food right Fighter too. Together we can create great social change and make hunger history. So take action! Be a Food Right Fighter!
We have a collective responsibility to make sure that biofuel investments do not compromise food security. “No biofuel without a policy- ensure food security!”

We demand that the ministry of energy and minerals ensures that the national biofuel task force develop a policy and regulatory framework for biofuel investment that ensures food security!

We demand that the ministry of agriculture, though its representation in the task force, push for a policy that ensures food security!

We demand that the ministry of land and TIC, stop approving land for biofuel production, without a policy!

And we demand that the government stops delaying the process of policy formulation!

The government should start taking the responsibility for their own people. Start supporting the local small scale farmers and the local development instead of endangering the wellbeing of the Tanzanian people by favoring the investors. Food insecurity is a political manmade problem, and therefore mankind can change it. Together we can change this!!

This is the World Food Day!

This is the time for social change!

We now want to invite some very important people up on stage that we believe have the power to make the change that we want. We believe in you, and that you can be the best food right fighter there is. Would a representative from the ministry of energy and mineral, the ministry of agriculture and food security and the ministry of land to kindly join us on stage?

We would like to present you this future award, for the effort that you are going to make in meeting your demands J we believe that you want the best for Tanzania, and we recognize your intentions of formulation a policy and legislation that will guide biofuel investment in a sustainable manner. It marks the date of the founding of FAO in 1945. The aim of the Day is to heighten public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. In 1980, the General Assembly endorsed observance of the Day in consideration of the fact that "food is a requisite for human survival and well-being and a fundamental human necessity"

Therefore every year, on October 16th the world commemorates this day. This year round, the global change Tanzania 2010, intends to attend this day at the Blue peal in Ubungo plaza on this coming Saturday under the umbrella of Action aid <place w:st="on"><country-region w:st="on">Tanzania</country-region></place>. Unfortunately this is a closed event not open to the public but the media and different <country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Tanzania</place></country-region> government officials will be present.

The theme of the day will be “land grabbing”, this theme being very much in line with our campaign, we intend to take advantage of the day to present a speech about our findings from the field and our message. As global change, we are against land allocation for biofuels investment in <country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Tanzania</place></country-region> until there’s a policy in place. According to our research and findings, the biofuels production in <country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Tanzania</place></country-region> right now is a threat to food security. We are hoping to drive our message to our main targets of our campaign that are the Ministry of Energy and minerals, Ministry for Agriculture and food security and the Ministry for land.

We are also planning to build a car model which we plan to present that day as a demonstration of how maize is used for fuel production to move cars while people are starving with no food to eat.

The global change <place w:st="on"><country-region w:st="on">Tanzania</country-region></place> being the food right fighters and members of Activista, our objective is to also try to convince people that they can be the change that they want in terms of hunger alleviation by becoming food right fighters. In our group we are 20 people from 7 different countries in the age between 20-31 years. We have both Christians and Muslims and of course different sub religions from these two. We also have people who are none religious. We go to school together and besides that we also all live together under the same roof, a lot of us even in the same room. We prepare dinner together, we watch TV together, we eat together - in short we do almost everything together. The result of all this is a lot of cultural exchange. We have had a lot of interesting conversations about religion, homosexuality, manners, traditions etc. I think that in the process of this course we learn a lot about each others cultures and I think through this we actually also learn a lot about our own culture. The reason for posting this blog is a thought I got from thinking about this cultural exchange, that maybe in social change a key word should be exchange, wether it is culture, knowledge or other aspects, because I think in learning about others we can learn more about our selves and our backgrounds and through this knowledge we can learn our strengths and weaknesses.

Our First Public Appearance

Today we attended the press conference held by Action Aid Tanzania, to launch their HungerFREE Scorecard 2010 – Who’s really fighting hunger? He started out questioning our newly constructed objective by saying is it really going to make a difference for the people involved? Maybe working with policies and thereby working from the top down is not the way forward? Maybe we need to start on a ground level and see what qualities are actually already in the group of people that we are working with, which in our case are the small-scale farmers, and what can be used in combating their issues. Their being a key word, for that is what this is, it is their fight and we therefore need to make them involved and use their power. We need to see what is powerful in these people and connect with that. This can be exemplified in an exercise we did last week, where we in two groups had to plan a fictive party – the first group had to always say ‘yes, but…’ to all the suggestions given and the other group had to say ‘ yes, and…’ This led to a result where the first group didn’t manage to plan a party and the other one managed to plan several different ones. What we can learn from that is that if we build on the resources, which are already there, we can get further.

According to Mr. Rajani it is often the NGO’s agenda that decides the topic of a campaign, but the job of the NGO should instead be to listen to the people’s stories and not teach them about wrong and right. We are not the ones who should be heard, we are the ones that should make sure that the effected people are being heard. A quote from the lecture is: ‘Campaigns don’t change the world alone – people change the world!’ This means in order for us to make this campaign work we have to get the effected people involved. Now the question is, how are we going to do that??? This we don’t have the answer for yet, but hopefully we will be able to figure out a solution within the next couple of weeks.

One thing is for sure, Mr. Rajani encouraged us to be critical of our own campaign and our own role in this campaign, and this is a really important element in making a campaign, and something we really need to think about in the future. This is also a call for people here on the blog to comment on some of our posts, and be critical to what we write, because sometimes in the process of work you need to be pulled out of your mode and to have a wake up call.

The Role of policies in tackling hunger

The big fat contradiction of having close to a billion people being hungry and an equal number being overweight is an irrefutable indicator that the causes of hunger are rarely natural causes but policies related. Policies touching on agricultural production play a very big role in escalating or addressing the problem of hunger.

I will give a classical example of the Structural Adjustment Program(SAPS)s imposed on developing countries in the 1980s spilling into 1990s,by the world bank and IMF, among the stipulation of this programs was to have governments in this country cut down on state expenditure and privatizations of parastatols .agriculture suffered most from this proviso-before then the government used to subsidize the cost of fertilizers, seeds and played a big role in helping the farmers market the products through the use of marketing boards- this created a genuine boast and Africa did not only feed its population but exported food to the rest of the world.

Flowing from the SAPS, farmers were now producing at a higher cost and to add salts to the injury they had no one to help with the marketing instead they had to compete with private investors and influx of cheap imported foods, this meant agriculture was no longer profitable especially for the same scale farmers. The private investors did not quite fill the gap created when the government stopped subsidizing and investing in agriculture. the result of this were catastrophic-lower food production and over reliance on imported which is susceptible to global market variation. This problem caused by the SAPs has subsisted to the 21st Century and is one of the classical causes of hunger stories in Africa and most developing countries. It destroyed Africa´`s agriculture. Africa is not only unable to feed itself but now a net food importer.

Policies can also positively tackle hunger in a positive way. The 2006 Maputo Plan of Action required that African government allocate 10% of their national budget to Agriculture. Most are yet to live upto this but there are success stories of which Tanzania is one of them. It is not yet a 10% increase but there has been an increase to about 7% and this could may able explain the ``kilimo kwanza Intiative``.

Another example of how policies contribute to hunger is the recent attempt of the US and the EU to increase their use of Bio fuels, This attempt has increased demand for bio fuels and explains why investors are buying land en masses to plant crops used for biofuels production but who would blame them there are incentives in place that makes farming of those profitable. Entry of biofuels in the market would entail a competition of with food crops which threaten the food security which is already in jeopardy . By advocating for policies and laws governing the production of bio fuels we are simply asking that measures be put in place to ensure every arable agriculture is safeguarded for food crop farming and that biofuel farming does not take up all the valuable resources for farming of food. if this is left for the market forces then the prices of food crops would be very high and more people would not be in a position to afford sufficient food!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The truth, however, is that things have changed in recent years. The world today is more prosperous than it ever has been. The technological advances we have seen in recent years have created encouraging new opportunities to improve economies and reduce hunger.
To think that 1.02billion people are hungry, when the world is more prosperous than it has ever been... has to be taken in with a pinch of salt. There is an extremely unequal income distribution in the world and within specific countries.
To be honest it’s very easy to watch and even rely on the United Nations, government, or donors to deal with the hunger issue whilst we sit fold our arms and pretend everything is okay. Fighting hunger is a collective responsibility...The little contribution that you and I could make as individuals would definitely go along way...What if we embraced the bible theory were the people that had more than enough reached out to the poor.. For instance in the first centuries of Christianity the poor were fed, clothed, and sheltered at a personal sacrifice.
Fighting hunger is a collective responsibility... if every individual who earns a little extra income more than they need, takes interest and offers to feed/ sponsor one child in school, hunger will be history, and even within the poorest of nations this is possible because it is within these same countries that the gap between the rich and poor is wide. The tendency of waiting for external help to feed our hungry within a country must come to an end... The time to take responsibility is NOW!
The global change in Tanzania is working tirelessly to hold a successful campaign that will consequently contribute to PUNCHING HUNGER out of Tanzania; we are taking a step further by not only discussing challenges but taking responsibility to act off these challenges.

Thoughts by Nankonde Nakanyika.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

We the Global Change students continue to explore Tanzania in reference to fighting hunger. As students of Global Change Course 2010 Tanzania and on behalf of our trainers we are so much touched by the issue of biofuels not only in Tanzania but in Africa as a whole, we all believe it’s a challenge to food security and hunger related issues.

As we are embarking on our second week as we are pushing on our course in order to go for our goal of saving the 800 million people still living in hunger despite the world politician’s radical statements to end poverty and hunger. As part of our campaigns, biofuels has become a topical issue in relation to food security and let’s take a case study of biofuels in northern part of Tanzania. the investment of jatrophain the northern Tanzania is a risky venture, according to my survey it came on my notice that the cost-benefit analysis reveals that farmers will only start earning money after yields of around 3,00o kilograms per hectare of jatropha seed, it has also revealed that fertile land in northern Tanzania has been sacrificed to grow the oil-rich jatropha and this still a rather risky and long term investment with insecure prospects and high opportunity costs, this is happening in many African countries as a huge chunks of fertile land are taken for the several biofuels sources being considered as the world searches for alternatives to fossil fuels. When energy prices soared in 2007, manycompanies, private investors, NGOs, farmers and national as well as local governments from developed and developing countries embarked on jatropha ventures, this is a thorn in the fresh and has negative implications especially in this when the world is facing three interconnected problems of poverty, hunger and climate. here in Tanzania, the viability of jatropha seed production is yet to be thoroughly assessed though there have been some investigations into its feasibility in east Africa but these has been largely based on assumptions of data from else where which are not neither applicable nor dependable in reality. It is quiet disappointing to note that despite of data, more than 10,000 small holder farmers in Tanzania are establishing jatropha plantations. the situation worsened by the fact that many farmers tend to intercrop jatropha with food crops on arable land thus reducing food production for little or no gain. this reminds me hedges in his book stuffed and starved where he talks about lack of farmers choice and he puts it very clear,” the majority of world’s farmers are suffering, some are selling off their land to become laborers on their family plots, some migrate to the cities or overseas, a few, too many resort to suicide” the same story will happen I predict. The current situation shows that jatropha cultivation is only profitable under certain conditions and unlike

Kelly to substantially increase employment the income in rural areas, this can be evinced in the management and harvesting of jatropha requires considerable labor in put of which local poor farmers can not afford. in a nutshell, it is very important to note that the poor farmers are going to be underpaid, loosing their suitable land, shifting from food production to jatropha, becoming squatters on their own land, because there is no policy framework, and the legal frame work is not clear as the farmers can not take part in the sell and compensation of their suitable land directly but only literature on papers full of empty promises, which will never happen until Jesus comes back, of which am not so sure.

Kiranda: student global change 2010 Tanzania.

Hunger and the Climate Change

During this week the big discussions we have had on the Global Change course, has rotated around how hunger and bio-fuels are connected. Because these subjects are so complicated, it is difficult for us to grasp it all. That is why we now are airing the perspectives that we have thought about it.

Is bio-fuel the way to solve the climate changes, or are bio-fuels the source of the hunger problem, therefore causing an equally as big a problem?

As we see it, it really depends on how the bio-fuel is produced and from what and where. On one side bio-fuel is causing the big hunger problem in Tanzania, which leads to many people in Tanzania are starving, because big international companies are grabbing the land from the local people, and using it to produce jatropha or sugarcanes to mention some crops. This means that a lot of the land in Tanzania is used to grow crops that can’t be used as food for the local people. Then where is the food going to come from, when it is too expensive to import food from other countries? What I have just described is also provoking the prices on food in Tanzania, which means that food prices are rising so that people can’t afford to buy the food they need to survive, when 58% of the population of Tanzania are living for under 1 dollar a day. So from this perspective bio-fuel in Tanzania is one of the root problems to hunger in Tanzania.

On the other hand, bio-fuel is also framed as a product to come about the climate changes on a global level. If we don’t try to do something about the climate changes in the world, the climate is also going to make it difficult or almost impossible to cultivate the land and thereby getting food for the starving people. So how to go around these problems, when it seems that one problem leads to the other?

As I mentioned in the beginning of this blog post, it is also a discussing of how, where and of what bio-fuels are produced. The situation in Tanzania, as we see it, is quite complicated, because the bio-fuel is being produced from non-eatable crops, and because the production of bio-fuels demands huge amounts of energy, which also contribute to the global warming.

So as you might have read from this post, this is still a debate that we are having and that is very importent for our future campaign.

We therefore call upon you to join in, and tell us what you think about this subject. Now that i s one huge contradiction which points to a cosmos that has gone wrong and a breakdown of the food system.

This breakdown in the system calls for us to ask questions and delve deeper to find the root cause of the problem. We may probably may not be going to bed hungry but we are unable to buy quality food or are paying to much for the for it.

For the next couple of weeks and in the course of our camapign we shall be looking at the multi dimensional causes of hunger and its various manifestations and we invite you to join us. The key areas of focus will be the effect of structral adjustment program by the Bretton wood institution on agriculture and Biofuels in realations to food security!

PS* The week that was , was a fruitful for the Global changers at the platform in Tanzania and we had a chance to hear from the team at the Global platform in Nepal, and interact with Students from from a University in Dar es saalam ...there is always a sense of comfort in number and not forgetting the power in it.

Future Workshop

During the week we have all been preparing future workshops for a group of young students, some of them newly graduated from the agricultural faculty at the University of Dar es Salaam. The purpose was to generate as many ideas as possible on how we can combat hunger! And today was the big day! It was a huge success :) Throughout the day we did a lot of brainstorming and had some very interesting and useful discussions so that in the end we actually managed to come up with brilliant ideas and solutions to how we can punch hunger. But what was equally as important for us global changers was that the participants were so willing to share their knowledge on what is going on and the situation here in Tanzania. Among others, we heard how people are not always aware on their rights and how land has been taken away from them and forced to move with only little resources to build a new existence. This is only an indication of that what we are doing is needed. These young people were so cool and we learned a lot from them. And just as cool, they liked what we are doing and would be happy to help us and join us! SO GREAT :) Because we will need these clever young people to shape our campaign and to reach our goal – thank you so much guys!!!

With all the great ideas we came up with in the future workshop today, we see that, as youth we are a very important resource that governments depend on for national development.

Let’s join hands in combating hunger in Africa!

READING THURSDAYS !

Thursdays are clearly becoming our ritual for reading. ON 26TH AUGUST 2010, we read a text which is the introduction from Raj Patel’s “stuffed and starved”. As you may know by now our team is aiming at building a powerful campaign around having a hunger free world, it is therefore of extreme importance that we have as much information around this topic as we can. Hence, our focus today on this brilliant and exhaustively researched book called stuffed and starved.
Just to highlight a few salient points from his book, in his introduction, Raj Patel argues that
• Today, when we produce more food than ever before, more than one in ten people on earth are hungry!!
• Global hunger and obesity are symptoms of the same problem and, what’s more, the route to eradicating world hunger is also a way to prevent global epidemics of diabetes and heart disease and to address a host of environmental and social ills.
After reviewing this text we looked at the root causes to hunger in relation to the text and also relating our findings to situations in our countries.

Two major root causes discussed were that

1. What we are offered in stores is controlled by a few key players’ hence local farmers losing their markets.
2. Big corporations influence governments (World trade organisation), consumers (money), hence and interests of farmers are not protected
Conclusion: Raj Patel helps us deconstruct the long accepted folk wisdom that “the poor are hungry because they are lazy”

Facts about Tanzania

These are some facts about Tanzania that we find interesting.

HakiArdhi

The Visit to HAKIARDHI

Today we went to the organization HAKIARDHI to learn more about biofuel and land rights in Tanzania. This we feel is important to share with you, so you also can increase your knowledge about why our campaign is important and what it is all about.

HAKIARDHI is a land rights research and resources institute. It is a nongovernmental and non profit sharing organization that was founded in 1994 to among other things, promote, advance, and advocate for the right to land and other resources of the majority small producers. HAKIARDHI has conducted researches in a wide range of areas, published a number of titles on land reforms and constantly advocates for a socially just and equitable access to ownership and control of land and other resources by Tanzania populace.

Mr. Myensi from the organization, told us, the students of Global Change Tanzania that his institution main interventions areas are:
Research, Publications and Researches:
- Make research on land acquisition, ownership, control and conduct rapid responds to solve land conflicts in many part of the country etc.
- Publication: Making publication on important statements made by people on land issues and printing calanders, leaf lets with messages on land issues etc.
- Documentation: Filed important documents on their intervention areas etc.
Public engagement and advocacy:
- They engage the public on land right trainings and many advocacy programmes with the government and the communities.

The discussion ended with question and answers session between us and the executive director for clearing the minds and droughts on the issues around land rights, acquisition, control, ownership and the coming of biofuels in Tanzania.

We were inspired by the work of HAKIARDHI and among other things we learn about, land ownership and control, the issues surrounding biofuels, laws on land in Tanzania. These motivate us to do more research in future on biofuels and land right in Tanzania to help us do our campaign and leadership course better.
We found the meeting very interesting and educative as we learn a lot from the discussion with Mr.Myensi, but we also gained the awareness about, that this is a very complicated subject. So many people are involved and so many things affect each other. That is why this education is so important for us to gain a greater understanding of the social problems in Tanzania.

Flash Mob

The Flash Mob Presentation

First day in MS ActionAid’s Global Change course took a turn none of us had expected. We were introduced to each other and the teachers whom presented our first event. We were going to perform an African dance in the biggest market of Tanzania, Kariakoo, in half an hour. Before that we a dance instructor taught us how to perform in the biggest market in Tanzania called Kariakoo! Everyone was anxious and nervous for what where going to happen when the music started playing, but all of a sudden we were performing in front of more than one hundred people! The Tanzanians did not understand what was going on and more and more people came to see the performance – one of the local even joined in dancing! This was a good experience which broad us together as a team and taught us something about what we are capable of doing even with just very short time of preparation. Next time when we go to present a ‘flash mob’ we will suggest having a clearer message according to the problem in society we are fighting against in our campaign.

The flashmob at Kariakoo

First day in MS ActionAid’s Global Change course took a turn none of us had expected. We were introduced to each other and the teachers whom presented our first event. We were going to perform an African dance in the biggest market of Tanzania, Kariakoo, in half an hour. Before that we a dance instructor taught us how to perform an African dance in the biggest market in Tanzania called Kariakoo!
